Addis Ababa, May 5 - South Africa won the 16th African Championships in Athletics coming largely at the top of the medals ranking with 22 medals (12 gold, 2 silver, 8 bronze). Nigeria is the second country at the medals table with 19 medals collected (7 gold, 7 silver, 5 bronze). Ethiopia, the hosting country, is third with 15 medals (6 gold, 6 silver, 3 bronze) followed by Kenya, winner of 16 medals (5 gold, 5 silver, 6 bronze). These four countries have clearly dominated the championships, capturing a combined 30 of the 44 gold medals. For reminder, 46 countries took part to the event. 24 countries won at least one medal in these African championships.

The CAA congratulated Ethiopia for the excellent organization of the championships which mark the first time Ethiopia has hosted such an event.

From now, it's time to focus on Olympic Games! Let's put our efforts together to enable Africa to fly higher in Beijing and for a long time again, the banner of success!

Addis-Abeba, 5 Mai - L'Afrique du Sud a remporté les 16èmes Championnats d'Afrique d'athlétisme. Avec 22 médailles (12 or, 2 argent, 8 bronze) gagnées, les sud africains sont arrivés largement en tête du classement des médailles, devançant le Nigeria, qui récolte 19 médailles (7 or, 7 argent, 5 bronze). L'Ethiopie, le pays hôte, finit troisième avec 15 médailles (6 or, 6 argent, 3 bronze), et le Kenya, quatrième, vainqueur de 16 médailles (5 or, 5 argent, 6 bronze). Ces quatre pays ont nettement dominé ces championnats, remportant 30 des 44 médailles d'or. Pour rappel, l'évènement a vu la participation de 46 pays du continent. Au total, 24 pays ont gagné, au moins, une médaille dans ces Championnats d'Afrique.

La CAA s'est félicitée du succès de ces Championnats saluant l'Ethiopie qui a su organiser avec brio le premier évènement sportif majeur de son histoire.

Cap maintenant sur les Jeux Olympiques ! Et conjuguons dès à présent nos efforts pour que l'Afrique porte toujours plus haut à Pékin, et pour longtemps encore, le flambeau du succès !
